'That dog is going to end up with me taking care of it': Husband tries to convince his overworked wife of a 5-month-old to take on a puppy, she says no and calls him childish for even bringing it up, he expects her to apologize

When it comes to being a dog owner, the main thing that you have to understand is that the second you adopt the dog, it's no longer about you. They are a part of your life, they depend on you, they love you, the expect you to do what is best for them, and that is exactly what you are supposed to do. If you can't put your dog's well-being ahead of your occasional discomfort, then you should not be adopting a dog. 

For a dog to thrive, it has to be in the best environment possible, and that was not what this puppy was going to get with this family. We get that puppies are adorable, we really do, but that is not the right reason for adopting one. You have to have enough time to love them, train them, be with them. And can't just drop a new, active puppy on your overworked stay at home wife, who's already taking care of a toddler and another dog with dental issues. You just can't. And you certainly can't have an attitude about it.

    We have a 4 month old baby, my husband is gone from 5am to 5pm during the week if not later. I live across the world from our "village" so I haven't had any help with baby and do all nights, days, weekends...

    The owner of his company offered him a hunting dog breed puppy. We already have a dog and can't afford the 2.5k dental work he needs atm, we are in cc debt, have a lot of monthly expenses.

    I called him childish in the text thread bc I mean you'd have to explain to a child: no honey we can't bring a puppy home, they are a big responsibility and need training, time, we have a baby at home and no help so we can't add on a puppy.

I told him I'm not that bold and he dd laughing lol Tell him I hope the dog likes sleeping in your office He said put it in the truck We used to be able to I'm telling you if you bring that dog here we will have problem A BIG problem Lmao I'm not We can't even afford to do teeth appt at the vet so his mouth doesn't smell we can't take on the expense of another one

  • Look, at the end of the day, what matters more than anything is the puppy's well-being, and clearly, this is not the best place for it at the moment. It's also not a great bet to keep it with the person trying to get rid of it, since it doesn't seem like they're too invested in its well-being either. Here's to hoping it'll get the forever home that it deserves.

  • We agree with the comments though. While the wife is right, the whole thing could have been worded a bit more kindly. We get her frustration, but you probably wouldn't want your husband snapping at you like that, definitely not for something that he might have thought was a good thing to do for the puppy.

    BreakfastEntire652 He has NO IDEA how much work a "world class bloodline" hunting dog would be. Anyone who has a such bloodline wouldn't be giving them out to someone who clearly doesn't know anything about them so I'm highly skeptical of that title. It's insane for him to think you'd be ok with that since the responsibility would fall on you.

    Yes he's being irresponsible if he has had to rehome a dog already for not training it... he needs to get a fish instead. This is how high drive working breeds end up in shelters at 1year old then euthanized bc they can't cope with the stress or have picked up bad habits from never training.

    If you ever DO consider getting a dog, tell him to do some extensive research on training. Then, foster from a shelter. That way you can ensure it fits into your home. If he cant prove his responsibility during foster, no harm it was just a temporary set up and you did some good in the meantime. Win win. But it sounds like now is a terrible time.

    Warthog Round3000 I think the way u put it was slightly more agro than needed bur I understand your feelings. But you are right, i think hes caught up in a moment and wants a dog on a whim. If you cant afford your current dogs dental work, having another dog will only bring your bills up more and give you another thing to stress about when you have a baby to take care of.
